These photographs capture my favourite places visited during a four day visit to Rome in August 2017. What they do not capture is the phenomenal heat during this heatwave that effected Southern Europe.

Temperatures by mid-day were between 36 and 40° C. The monumental buildings acted as radiators to the sun - adding to heat from the sun.

Nevertheless, this was our first visit to Rome and we were determined to see it and we did. The open top bus tour provided us with a good introduction to the city. From there we walked everywhere. Walking from 10:30am to 9:30pm we covered a good distance - particularly given the weather conditions. With our map in hand and comprehensive guide from my friend Lee, we did our best to see as much as we could.

I take my hat off to the tens of thousands of people who, like ourselves got on and enjoyed this wonderful city in temperatures that often were challenging.

I have always enjoyed looking at the work of the great Street Photographers - Martin Parr and Vivian Maier. I was fascinated by the enthusiasm for the selfie. Using phones and selfie stick, people were delighted taking self portraits or group portraits of their families. Some of the photographs here capture the new revolution in photography- the selfie. Other street photographs here capture interesting people that made the city so fascinating.

The design, craftsmanship and scale of the buildings is mind boggling. Every time you turn a corner you are greeted with another spectacular sight. A wonderful four days - and thank goodness for refrigerated water and air conditioned hotels!
